G. Raymond Ahrens
November 20, 1948 – November 8, 2025

G. Raymond “Ray” Ahrens passed away peacefully on November 9, 2025, in Newton, Massachusetts, holding the hands of his children and listening to the Beatles. He was 76 years old.

Ray was born in Pearl River, New York, to his adoring parents, George and Lucy Ahrens. A proud Baby Boomer, he grew up as the middle child alongside his sisters, Charlou and Debbie. As a young athlete, Ray excelled as a talented baseball player, a county soapbox derby champion, and a three-time county and sectional wrestling champion.

At Lowell Tech, Ray discovered the brothers he would carry through life: Tony, Joe, Kendall, and Dennis—brothers not by blood but by bond for more than six decades. During this time, he took part in the cultural awakening of his generation by attending Woodstock and leading protests of the Vietnam War.

After college, Ray stumbled upon a job as a rental agent in Beacon Hill, and he never looked back. It quickly became a calling. With the help of his friend Mac Grant, he secured his first major development opportunity, launching a successful career as a builder and real estate developer. Ray developed in Boston, Maine, and Pittsburgh, and despite his many accomplishments, he was always known as a man of the people.

Ray went on to meet the love of his life, Sara, on Newbury Street. They recently celebrated their 45th wedding anniversary. Their wedding at the Copley was coincidentally held on the same date, time, and hotel as lifelong friends Roger and Janet.

A devoted father, Ray poured his heart into raising and supporting his children. One of the greatest gifts Dylan and Stephanie received from their dad was his deep love for people and his ability to see the good in everyone. Ray’s remarkable gift for connection and compassion was impossible not to be inspired by, and is a lesson they will carry with them always.

Ray never missed his children’s soccer games, tournaments, dance recitals, cheerleading competitions, or even a good old Nor’easter snow day from Newton Public Schools. He somehow managed to be completely present while also capturing every moment on his Canon camera or larger-than-life camcorder. To give you a quick example, there are many photos / videos of his son speeding down double black diamonds in North Conway, New Hampshire, while Ray himself was on skis. To this day, Stephanie still tells people how her dad and older brother were always the best skiers on the entire mountain.

His greatest joy may have been coaching his son’s two-time state championship soccer team, the Cougars. He coached countless teams and sports, accurately predicting his son would win Newton North’s first state title in wrestling, and was present for every milestone in his children’s lives.

Take just a few steps into the Ahrens family’s 125-year-old Victorian home in West Newton Hill, and you immediately see Ray’s remarkable gift for photography and how deeply he cherished watching Dylan and Stephanie grow into the people they became. Because of Ray, the family home on Otis Street was a warm, welcoming place where everyone felt at home.

Ray took care of his family in ways that often felt almost impossible. He cooked what many would call a five-star dinner every night, with his homemade apple pies being a beloved specialty. He was also a builder in every sense of the word—secretly renovating the basement as a Christmas surprise for his children as they reached the age of independence, and later transforming his daughter Stephanie and her husband Ari’s first home in Boca Raton, Florida, into a beautiful space filled with style and charm during a two-week stay with them.

Ray also enjoyed writing and went on to author three novels, capturing stories with the same passion he brought to every part of his life. He found joy in simple moments and could often be found tending to his garden. He will be remembered as an exceptional chef, a devoted photographer and filmmaker of life’s moments, a loving father figure to many, and more often than not, the best skier on Attitash Mountain.

Ray is survived by his beloved wife, Sara; his son, Dylan (Lilly); his daughter, Stephanie (Ari); and his grandchildren, Henry and George. Ray leaves behind extended family, devoted friends, and the many people whose lives were made brighter by knowing him.
